Why Diagnose First

What an AC Diagnostic Service Actually Is

An air conditioner can quit for dozens of reasons, and many of them look identical from the thermostat. Warm air might mean a dead capacitor, a refrigerant leak, a frozen coil or a clogged outdoor unit. A proper air conditioner troubleshooting service separates those possibilities with measurements instead of guesses, so you pay for the repair you need and nothing else.

That is the difference between a diagnostic and a quick look. Our technicians check electrical readings, pressures, temperatures and airflow, confirm the failed part, and look for the reason it failed. A capacitor replaced without asking why it overheated is often a capacitor replaced again next summer.

Diagnostics are the first step of every AC repair visit we run. If the system turns out to be near the end of its life, you will hear that too, along with honest numbers to compare.

HVAC System Inspection

What We Test During a Diagnostic Visit

The exact sequence depends on the symptom, but a complete HVAC system inspection for a cooling failure usually covers these points.

  • Thermostat settings, wiring and signal to the equipment
  • Breakers, disconnect and incoming voltage
  • Capacitor readings against rated values
  • Contactor condition and coil voltage
  • Compressor and condenser fan motor amp draw
  • Refrigerant pressures and superheat or subcooling
  • Supply and return temperature split
  • Blower motor operation and airflow
  • Evaporator coil for ice, dirt or corrosion
  • Condensate drain line, pan and float switch
  • Control board fault codes on newer systems
  • Signs of a refrigerant leak at fittings and coils

Pricing

The AC Diagnostic Fee, Explained Plainly

Our standard AC diagnostic fee is $99. It covers the technician's trip and the time spent testing and documenting the fault. When you approve the repair, we waive the diagnostic fee (a minimum repair amount applies), so in most cases the visit costs nothing extra.

After testing, you receive a written flat-rate quote. The price does not change because the job took longer than expected, and no work begins until you say yes. If you decide not to repair, you only pay the diagnostic.

Calls placed before 2 PM for a failed AC are covered by the Reliance Comfort Promise: we get there the same day, or the diagnostic fee is free. Members of the Reliance Air Club also receive priority dispatch and repair discounts. Current offers are listed on our specials page.

Symptom Guide

Common Symptoms and How We Troubleshoot Them

Each symptom points to a short list of likely causes, and the diagnostic narrows it to one. The linked guides explain what you can safely check yourself. If a breaker trips more than once, leave it off and call, because repeated resets can damage the compressor.

Blowing warm air

We start with the capacitor, contactor, refrigerant charge and a dirty condenser coil.

Warm air causes →

Ice on lines or coil

Usually an airflow problem: clogged filter, weak blower or low refrigerant.

Frozen AC guide →

Water around the air handler

Clogged drain lines, cracked pans and stuck float switches top the list.

Leak causes →

Unit will not start

Power supply, thermostat signal, blown fuses and control boards get checked in order.

No-start guide →

Breaker keeps tripping

A shorted compressor, failing capacitor or wiring fault is drawing too much current.

Breaker trips →

Buzzing, banging or squealing

Fan motor bearings, loose panels and contactor chatter each have a distinct sound.

Your Visit

How an Air Conditioner Troubleshooting Visit Unfolds

  1. Tell us the symptoms

Call (941) 417-4848 and describe what the system is doing. We schedule a window and dispatch a licensed technician.

  2. Measure and test

The technician works through electrical, refrigerant and airflow checks until the fault is confirmed, not assumed.

  3. Explain the findings

You see what failed, why it likely failed, and whether anything else is close behind it.

  4. Approve a flat-rate quote

You get a written price. Approve it and most common repairs are completed on the same visit from parts on the truck.

Repair or Replace

When the Diagnosis Points Toward Replacement

Sometimes the most useful thing a diagnostic tells you is that a large repair is not worth making. A failed compressor on an older system, a leaking evaporator coil on equipment that has already had several repairs, or a unit running an obsolete refrigerant can all tip the math toward replacement.

We lay out both options side by side so you can decide without pressure. Our repair or replace guide walks through the factors we weigh, including age, repair history and efficiency. If you own a Trane or Daikin and your thermostat or board is showing a fault code, our article on reading common error codes is a good place to start.

Common Questions

AC Diagnostic Service That Finds the Real Problem — FAQs

How much is an AC diagnostic fee?

Our standard diagnostic fee is $99. It is waived when you go ahead with the repair, subject to a minimum repair amount. If we cannot reach you the same day for an AC failure called in before 2 PM, the diagnostic fee is free under the Reliance Comfort Promise. You always receive a written repair quote before any work begins.

How long does an AC diagnostic take?

Most diagnostics take under an hour once the technician is on site. Simple electrical faults show up quickly, while intermittent problems, refrigerant leaks or communicating systems with control boards can take longer to confirm. The technician will tell you what they are testing and roughly how long it should take before they start.

Is a diagnostic the same as a tune-up?

No. A diagnostic is focused troubleshooting on a system that is not working correctly, aimed at finding one specific fault. A tune-up is preventive service on a working system that cleans, adjusts and inspects components before they fail. If your system is running fine and you want it checked, book an AC tune-up instead.

What should I do before the technician arrives?

Set the thermostat to cool and a few degrees below room temperature, check that the filter is not packed with dust, and look at the breaker panel. If you see ice on the refrigerant lines, switch the system off so it can thaw. Clear a path to the indoor and outdoor units so the technician can start testing right away.

Do you diagnose every brand of air conditioner?

Yes. Our technicians troubleshoot all major brands, including Trane, Daikin, Amana, Bryant, Carrier, Lennox, Goodman and Rheem, plus heat pumps and ductless mini-splits. Newer communicating and variable-speed systems often report fault codes that speed up the process, and we carry common parts for most equipment on the truck.

What if my AC fails at night or on a weekend?

Our office is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, and emergency dispatch runs 24/7. If your system quits after hours, call (941) 417-4848. For urgent situations in the Sarasota area, see our emergency AC repair page for what to expect.
