The Real Problem
In Florida, Air Quality Starts With Humidity
The EPA notes that indoor concentrations of some pollutants can run two to five times higher than typical outdoor levels. In Southwest Florida, moisture makes that worse. Damp air feeds mold on coils and in ductwork, helps dust mites thrive and leaves rooms feeling sticky even when the thermostat reads cool.
Your air conditioner is supposed to remove moisture as it cools, but an oversized system shuts off before it can, and a dirty coil or poor airflow cuts its ability further. Fixing humidity often means correcting the system first, then adding a whole-home dehumidifier where needed. Most guidance suggests keeping indoor relative humidity at or below roughly 50 to 60 percent to discourage mold.
What You're Breathing
Common Indoor Air Problems in Gulf Coast Homes
Mold spores
Damp evaporator coils, drain pans and ducts give mold a place to grow and spread through the house.
Pollen
A long growing season keeps pollen in the air, and the HVAC system circulates whatever the filter misses.
Pet dander and dust mites
Warm, humid homes are ideal for dust mites, and basic filters let fine dander pass through.
VOCs and odors
Cleaning products, new furniture and cooking release vapors that linger in tightly sealed homes.
Post-storm dust
Debris, construction dust and moisture after a hurricane can work their way into ducts and living spaces.
Air Purifier Installation and Other Solutions Compared
We match equipment to the problem you actually have, and many homes need only one or two of these.
| Solution | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| High-efficiency media filter | Captures much finer particles than a standard thin filter | Dust, pollen and pet dander; an easy first step |
| UV-C light for AC | Germicidal light inside the air handler keeps the coil and drain pan from growing mold and bacteria | Musty odors and recurring coil growth |
| REME HALO | In-duct purifier designed to treat air throughout the home and reduce odors and particles | Households wanting whole-home purification beyond the filter |
| Whole-home air purifier | Purification or filtration built into the ducted system so every room benefits | Allergy and asthma households |
| Whole-home dehumidifier | Pulls extra moisture from the air independent of cooling demand | Homes that feel damp or smell musty even with the AC running |
How an Indoor Air Quality Visit Works
Home assessment
A licensed technician checks humidity, inspects the air handler, coil and drain pan, and looks at duct and filter condition.
Clear recommendations
We explain what we found and suggest options in order of impact, with written flat-rate pricing.
Installation
Most add-on equipment installs in a few hours, integrated with your existing system.
Ongoing care
UV lamps, filters and purifier components need periodic replacement, which we can handle during maintenance visits.
Fix the Source, Not Just the Symptom
Equipment helps most when the basics are right. A system sized correctly for the home, ducts that are sealed and clean, and a drain line that flows freely all reduce the moisture and debris that drive poor air quality. That is why our assessment looks at the whole system rather than starting with a product.
We would rather install one piece of equipment that solves your problem than three that do not. If a filter upgrade and a drain line cleaning are all your home needs, that is what we will recommend.
If ducts are dirty or leaking, our duct cleaning and sealing services may be the better first step. If the air conditioner short-cycles, a repair visit or a properly sized replacement can solve humidity at its root. Members of the Reliance Air Club also get filters delivered, which keeps the simplest part of good air quality on schedule.

Common Questions
Indoor Air Quality Services — FAQs
Is a UV light for my AC worth it in Florida?
For many homes, yes. A UV-C lamp aimed at the evaporator coil and drain pan helps keep mold and bacteria from growing on damp surfaces inside the air handler, which is a common source of musty smells here. It does not replace filtration or humidity control, but it pairs well with both. Lamps need replacing periodically to stay effective.
How is REME HALO different from a UV light?
A coil UV light treats the surfaces inside your air handler where it is mounted. REME HALO is an in-duct purifier designed to work on the air moving through the system and the rooms it serves, targeting odors and airborne particles. Some homes benefit from one, some from both. We explain the trade-offs during the assessment.
Do I need a dehumidifier for my Florida home?
Not every home does. If a correctly sized, well-maintained AC keeps indoor humidity in a comfortable range, a separate unit may be unnecessary. Homes that still feel clammy, smell musty or show condensation may benefit from a whole-home dehumidifier tied into the ductwork, which controls moisture without overcooling.
Can better air quality help with allergies?
Reducing allergens in the air often makes a home more comfortable for people with allergies or asthma. Better filtration captures pollen and dander, and controlling humidity limits dust mites and mold. We cannot make medical promises, so talk with your doctor about health concerns and let us handle the equipment side.
How often should I change my air filter?
Standard thin filters usually need changing every month or two in Florida, more often with pets or nearby construction. Thicker media filters last longer. A clogged filter restricts airflow, reduces dehumidification and can even cause the coil to freeze. Club members receive filter delivery so changes happen on time.
Why does my AC smell musty?
A musty odor usually means moisture is lingering somewhere it should not, such as a dirty coil, a slow-draining pan, damp ductwork or a system that does not run long enough to dry the air. Cleaning the source and correcting humidity typically clears it. Our blog post on musty AC smells covers the causes in more detail.
